Telehealth is not a replacement for all healthcare. It is a different tool for a different set of problems. Understanding the tradeoffs helps you use it well.
What you gain with a video visit
- Speed: Connect in about 10 minutes vs. booking weeks out
- Cost: $29/month vs. $150-$400 per in-person visit without insurance
- Convenience: From your home, office, or anywhere with a camera
- No exposure: Not sitting in a waiting room with other sick people
- Flexibility: Business hours, Monday through Friday, no appointment needed
What you give up
- Physical examination: The provider cannot listen to your heart, feel a swollen lymph node, or check your reflexes
- On-site testing: No blood draws, swabs, or imaging during the visit
- Procedures: No stitches, wound care, or injections
- Continuity: Unless you use Medcare consistently, the provider may not know your full medical history
When traditional wins
If you need a physical exam, laboratory testing, a procedure, or you have a complex condition that requires hands-on monitoring, an in-person visit is the right choice. Your video provider will tell you when that is the case.
When telehealth wins
For most everyday concerns (colds, rashes, refills, follow-up questions, medication side effects, general health guidance), a video visit handles it faster, cheaper, and more conveniently. You do not need a stethoscope to decide whether a cough needs a prescription or rest.
Sign up online and connect with a provider in about 10 minutes Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM Eastern.
Before you start
Have your current medications and relevant history nearby. If you are helping a family member, let them decide who should be in the conversation. If you may be having a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
