Running out of a current prescription is one of the most common reasons people use telehealth. Here is how the refill process works.
When a refill is straightforward
If you have an established medication that is working well, a provider may send a refill to your pharmacy after a brief video review. They will confirm your current dosage, check for any side effects, and verify the medication is still appropriate.
When a refill needs more
Some medications require periodic monitoring. Your provider may ask you to get laboratory testing, check your blood pressure in person, or schedule an in-person evaluation before refilling certain prescriptions.
Have your pharmacy ready
During the visit, have your pharmacy name and location available. If your provider decides a refill is appropriate, they send the prescription electronically while you are still on the call.
Controlled substances
Controlled medications generally cannot be refilled through a routine video visit. Federal and state laws impose specific requirements. Your provider will explain what is needed.
The cost of a refill visit
If you are on the Individual plan, your monthly visit covers the refill review. If you have already used your included visit, an extra visit is $20. Compare that to a $200+ in-person appointment just to get the same refill.
Sign up online and connect with a provider in about 10 minutes Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM Eastern.
Before you start
Have your current medications and relevant history nearby. If you are helping a family member, let them decide who should be in the conversation. If you may be having a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
