If you've been thinking about losing weight but can't fit another doctor's appointment into your week, a telehealth weight loss program might be worth exploring. These programs have grown quickly—and for good reason. They offer convenience, lower costs, and often a more flexible approach to weight management. But they're not magic. And they're not for everyone.

As a nurse practitioner, I appreciate when patients come in with clear expectations. So let me walk you through how this type of program works, what it can realistically do, and where it may fall short. The goal is to help you decide if it's a good fit for your health needs.

What Is a Telehealth Weight Loss Program?

A telehealth weight loss program connects you with a licensed healthcare provider—often a nurse practitioner or physician—through live video visits. Instead of traveling to a clinic and sitting in a waiting room, you sign in from your phone, tablet, or computer. You talk about your health history, habits, and weight loss goals. The provider can then recommend a personalized plan, which may include nutrition guidance, physical activity suggestions, and, in some cases, prescription medications if appropriate.

At Medcare Telehealth, our providers are board-certified NPs licensed in New York and Florida. We're available Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM Eastern Time. Most patients can connect with a provider in about 10 minutes. No insurance is needed—you pay a simple monthly or family membership fee.

What Can You Realistically Expect?

Let's be honest: a telehealth weight loss program is not a shortcut. You won't lose 20 pounds in a week just by talking to a provider on video. Sustainable weight loss takes time, consistency, and often lifestyle changes. What a telehealth program can do is provide you with structured guidance, accountability, and medical oversight—especially helpful if you don't have a primary care provider or haven't had success with self-directed dieting.

Your NP may help you set realistic goals, discuss barriers like stress or sleep, and suggest small, manageable changes. If you qualify and it's appropriate, your provider may prescribe weight loss medications. However, not all medications are suitable for everyone, and they are not a substitute for healthy habits.

What you should not expect is a one-size-fits-all meal plan or a promise of rapid weight loss. Good telehealth programs, like ours, focus on your individual situation and health status.

Benefits and Limitations

Benefits:

  • Convenience: No travel, no wait—you can see a provider from your couch or during a lunch break.
  • Accessibility: If you live in NY or FL, you can get help even if clinics are hard to reach.
  • Cost predictability: A flat monthly fee (medical memberships) can be easier to budget than per-visit copays.
  • Continuity: You can build a relationship with one NP who knows your history.

Limitations:

  • No physical exam: Your NP can't measure your waist, listen to your heart, or check bloodwork in real time.
  • Lab tests require separate visits: If you need blood tests, you'll have to go to a local lab.
  • Not ideal for complex conditions: If you have significant heart disease, severe metabolic issues, or an eating disorder, an in-person team may be safer.
  • Limited prescribing in some cases: Many states have rules about telehealth prescriptions, and not all medications are appropriate for virtual care.

That's why it's important to be honest with your NP about your medical history and any symptoms. The more we know, the better we can guide you—or refer you to the right specialist if needed.

Medcare Telehealth at a glance: $29/month individual, $49/month family (up to 4 visits total). Live video visits with board-certified NPs, available Mon–Fri 9am–6pm ET. No insurance required. Sign up anytime at medcaretelehealth.org/sign-up/.

Is This Program Right for You?

If you're generally healthy, need a bit of structure, and prefer virtual visits, a telehealth weight loss program may work well. You'll benefit from regular check-ins and a provider who knows your name and your goals.

However, if you have chronic conditions like diabetes or hypertension, you may need more than one visit per month. Some weight loss medications require lab monitoring, so your provider will tell you if that's necessary. Also, if you've had bariatric surgery in the past, you likely need specialized follow-up—telehealth may not be enough.

At Medcare, we focus on honest, practical advice. We can help with weight management, but we'll also let you know if you need a higher level of care. Our goal is your health, not just a number on a scale.

Before You Start

Ready to give it a try? Before your first video visit, please have any current medications, supplements, and your medical history handy. Being prepared lets your NP make the best recommendations for you.

And remember: if you are experiencing chest pain, shortness of breath, severe headache, or any other symptom that might be a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately. Do not wait for a telehealth appointment—we are not a substitute for urgent care.

For non-emergency weight management guidance, we're here Monday–Friday, 9am–6pm Eastern. You can sign up online and have your first visit in minutes. Let's work together—virtually—to help you feel better, one step at a time.
