Woke up with a sore throat that feels like broken glass when you swallow? You might be thinking, “Do I need to drag myself to a clinic for a strep test?” The good news: telehealth can help. But you also need the straight story on what’s possible and what’s not.
What Telehealth Can (and Can’t) Do for Strep Throat
Telehealth providers can evaluate your symptoms, review your history, and decide if you’re a candidate for a strep throat telehealth prescription without an in-person visit. But there are limits. A video visit cannot swab your throat, so a definitive lab test isn’t possible. Providers often rely on a set of clinical criteria (like fever, tonsillar exudates, and tender lymph nodes) to decide if antibiotics may be appropriate. In many cases, if your symptoms and history strongly suggest strep, a prescription may be issued. However, if your provider suspects another cause (like a virus), or if your symptoms are unusual, they may recommend a rapid test or culture at a local lab or clinic. That’s an honest limitation—and it’s for your safety.
How Medcare’s Strep Throat Telehealth Prescription Process Works
At Medcare, you can get a live video visit with a board-certified nurse practitioner licensed in New York or Florida. You don’t need insurance, and there’s no hidden fee. Here’s what to expect:
- Sign up at medcaretelehealth.org—it takes less than two minutes.
- Request a visit during our operating hours (Monday–Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM Eastern).
- Connect with a provider in about 10 minutes via secure video.
- Discuss your symptoms—be ready to talk about fever, pain, swallowing difficulties, and any past strep infections.
- Get a treatment plan—if appropriate, the NP may send a prescription to your preferred pharmacy. They’ll also advise on symptom relief and when to see someone in person.
If you’re in a state we don’t cover, we’ll let you know before you pay—no surprises.
Cost and Coverage: No Insurance, No Problem
Medcare is designed to be simple and affordable. You pay a flat membership fee, and then each visit is included (up to 4 visits per year for the family plan). No insurance claims, no surprise bills. That means a strep throat telehealth prescription could cost you less than a typical copay or urgent care visit. And you don’t have to worry about whether your insurance will cover “virtual” visits—it’s self-pay, so you’re in control.
Individual membership: $29/month (visits included). Family plan: $49/month (up to 4 visits). No insurance needed. Live video visits with board-certified NPs, Mon–Fri, 9 AM–6 PM ET.

When You Should See a Provider In-Person Instead
Telehealth isn’t right for every situation. If you have severe difficulty breathing, swelling in your neck, or a fever over 103°F, you may need urgent or emergency care. Also, if you have a weakened immune system or a history of rheumatic fever, a virtual visit may not be enough—your NP will likely recommend an in-person test. Always trust your gut: if something feels off, get care promptly.
Before You Start
To make your visit smooth, have a list of any medications you take (including over-the-counter meds) and any allergies, especially to antibiotics like penicillin. Also, note when your symptoms started and if you’ve had strep before. If you think this could be a medical emergency—for example, you can’t swallow your own saliva or you’re having trouble breathing—do not wait for a video visit. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately.
Medcare is here for the everyday concerns. If you’re ready to get relief without the waiting room, start your membership today.
